40 Years of Presidential Debates
Melinda talks with Jim Lehrer about his new documentary Debating Our Destiny: 40 Years of Presidential Debates. Mr. Lehrer is the executive editor and anchor of the The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer on PBS. His documentary airs on PBS Sunday night.
F.X. Toole
Writer F.X. Toole. At age 70, he's just published his first book. It's a collection of short stories about boxing called Rope Burns: Stories from the Corner. (ECCO/HarperCollins) For twenty years, he's been a cut man, stopping the bleeding so fighters can go on to the next round. Toole has been writing for 40 years, but it was the publication of his first story last year in a small literary magazine that caught the attention of a book agent. Writers James Ellroy and Joyce Carol Oates have praised this book, the former calling it "the best boxing fiction ever written." Others have compared his literary style to Frank McCourt's. Toole worked as a cabbie, bartender and bullfighter before entering the world of boxing.

NHL Safety
Host Mike Shuster talks to Stephen Quinn of CBC Radio News in Vancouver about the trial of former NHL player Marty McSorley. He is charged with assaulting Donald Brashear, another Hockey player during a nationally televised game in February. The attack left Brashear bleeding and unconscious on the ice with a severe concussion.
MLB Scouts in Sydney
NPR's Uri Berliner reports from Sydney, Australia that most of the major league baseball teams have sent scouts to the Sydney games. The scouts are there to evaluate players especially pitchers in an effort to find new talents from various countries around the world.
Ameritech Ruling
Matthew Ferguson of Michigan Public Radio reports on the ruling against Ameritech. The Chicago-based phone service was fined for failing to clear the credit record of a customer who was wrongly billed for an account. The company, which serves five Midwestern states, has been under investigation in Indiana and Wisconsin for slow repair and service lapses.
Iraqi Christians Seek Asylum
From member station KPBS in San Diego, Carrie Kahn reports on the Iraqi Christians who are seeking asylum in U.S Already, 75 refugees have crossed from Mexico into the U.S., and over a hundred are still waiting. Most of them sneaked out of Iraq, then spend several years in Turkey or Greece before heading to Mexico.
