Garfield Assassination
119 years ago America was in shock. James Garfield became the second sitting President in less than 20 years to die from an assassin's bullet. Ironically, the inventor of the telephone had a machine that might have saved the President, but for a recent innovation in comfort, which got in the way. Historian Douglas Brinkley tells the story.
Body and Soul
Tonight the New York Film Festival will hold a special screening of Body and Soul, a silent film by the pioneering black director Oscar Micheaux. The film includes the first screen appearance by Paul Robeson, and will be presented with a live orchestra and a new score by trombonist Wyclife Gordon. David D'Arcy reports.
Double Dutch
Liane Hansen visits the Smithsonian Institution in Washington for a demonstration of Dutch 2000 -- an automatic jump rope turner invented by a young engineering student named Tahira Reid. The machine is designed to be used by one person in Double-Dutch rope jumping.
Small-town Editors
Host Jacki Lyden speaks with editors of three small-town papers about what issues their readers care about this election season. Though some towns have historically had high voter turnout, the editors say this year voters are much more motivated by local issues than by the chance to choose a president. We hear from Tom Lawrence of the Whitefish Pilot, in Whitefish, Montana; J.D. Davidson of the Times-Journal in Fort Payne, Alabama and Ross Connelly of the Hardwick Gazette, in Hardwick, Vermont.

Kathy Witkowsky reports on Montana's heated senate race between incumbent Republican Senator Conrad Burns and Democrat Brian Schweitzer.
