In honor of Women's History Month, we're pleased to offer Profiles In Women's History, a 15-part modular series from WJSU-FM in Jackson Miss. Written and narrated by Gina Carter-Simmers, the series is comprised of 3-minute vignettes that highlight the achievements of women in the arts and literature.
These highly produced pieces include narration, audio clips, and music. They entertain and educate listeners about the accomplishments of remarkable African- American women during the 20th century.
Profiles In Women's History includes the stories of female filmmakers, opera singers, actresses, prima ballerinas, authors, bandleaders, sculptors, composers and more.
Those active in the early 1900s overcame the double jeopardy of being black and female - - both groups relegated to second class citizenship in early America. These challenges, taken in stride by these brilliant women, have only made their accomplishments more inspiring.
Our congratulations to Gina Carter-Simmers for bringing this project to fruition. Gina is WJSU's general manager, and so she has lots on her plate. But, she feels passionately that these stories should be told. And we all become a little more human by hearing these noble stories.
