Janet Heimlich reports from Austin that 35-year-old Roy Criner was released from a Texas prison today after serving ten years for a rape he didn't commit. DNA evidence that surfaced three years ago suggested that Criner was innocent and he'll receive a pardon from Governor George W. Bush as soon as the paperwork is completed. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals declined to grant Criner a new trial three years ago, despite the fresh evidence, arguing that he still could have committed the crime.

One-hundred-thirty prisoners in Washington and Oregon volunteered in the 1960s and 1970's to participate in a federally sponsored experiment to determine the affects of radiation on sperm production. After the experiments, they received vasectomies. Now they are seeking compensation from the federal government, saying they were coerced into taking part in the experiments. Vice President Al Gore and Texas Governor George W. Bush have been all but bumper-to-bumper on the campaign trail this week as they concentrate on Midwestern swing states. Yesterday, Bush addressed the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Milwaukee, Wisconsin before heading to Illinois. Today, Gore spoke to the same VFW meeting before making his way to Chicago. Bush told the veterans that the Clinton-Gore administration had allowed U-S military readiness to deteriorate. Gore today enlisted the help of former Defense Secretary William Perry to rebut those charges. NPR's Melissa Block reports from Milwaukee.

Some researchers have been advising parents to reduce the fat in their children's diets to reduce the kids' risk of developing heart disease. But young children -- especially infants -- need some fat in their diets for normal growth. Now, NPR's Jon Hamilton reports a study of a group of children indicates that low fat diets may NOT have a negative effect on their growth.

NPR's Snigdha Prakash reports that at least 50,000 of the striking Verizon Communications workers are back on the job today as the two-week strike against the largest local phone company winds down. The unions said they were happy with terms of the deal, which gives them better pay and better benefits; more important, from their perspective, the unions have increased their ability to organize the company's wireless and Internet divisions. Analysts say the settlement is being closely watched by telecommunications industry.

An Indian immigrant allegedly murdered her children to spare them the shame of divorce. The court is weighing whether holding different cultural beliefs mitigates the crime. Commentator Lis Wiehl feels she deserves compassion, but that excusing the murder could open the floodgates for other immigrants to use a similar defense.
